New Publication: Natural Language Processing in Clinical Research Recruitment – A Scoping Review Enriched with Stakeholder Insights
Lara Bernasconi has co-authored a new article in Ethics and Human Research (Wiley), titled "Natural Language Processing in Clinical Research Recruitment: A Scoping Review Enriched with Stakeholder Insights".
In this work, we examine how Natural Language Processing (NLP) is being applied to identify and recruit clinical research participants, and we enrich the literature with perspectives from experts across multiple specialties to better understand the promises, challenges, and ethical implications.
While most publications focus on the accuracy and efficiency of NLP models, ethical aspects have received far less attention. Our interviews highlighted the urgent need for deeper ethical reflection and real-world implementation analysis, revealing diverse views on anonymization, informed consent, and the impact of NLP tools on fair access to trials.
We hope this paper contributes to ongoing dialogue and encourages responsible innovation in clinical trial recruitment.
