New research focus on normativity and autonomous intelligent systems 2018/19

The Freiburg Institute of Advanced Studies (FRIAS) at the University of Freiburg (Germany) has selected a new research focus for the academic year 2018/19 on normativity and autonomous intelligent systems. In this highly interdisciplinary project, researchers from the Faculty of Law (Prof Silja Vöneky), Computer Science (Prof Wolfram Burgard), Philosophy (Prof Oliver Müller), and Medicine (Dr Philipp Kellmeyer) will study the ethical, legal, philosophical and social challenges that emerge from the interaction between humans and autonomous intelligent systems, for example self-driving cars or intelligent neurotechnology. Throughout the academic year, the research focus will comprise graduate seminars, a public lecture series, an international symposium and other events. Furthermore, a number of international research fellows working on these topics will be staying at the FRIAS to work with the research focus team.

The leader of the research focus, Dr Philipp Kellmeyer, is a neurologist, neuroscientist and neuroethicist at the Translational Neurotechnology Lab of the Medical Center of the University of Freiburg and an affiliated researcher at the Institute for Biomedical Ethics and History of Medicine, University of Zurich. In his neureothics work, Dr Kellmeyer is particulalrly interested in ethical aspects of machine learning in neuroscience, the ethics of neuroimaging and disorders of consciousness and neurophilosophical aspects of human-machine interaction.
