The Institute of Biomedical Ethics and History of Medicine of the University of Zurich in collaboration with the Center for Bioethics of the Harvard Medical School will offer the first Intensive Bioethics Course, which will be also the 10-year anniversary conference of our institute. 

The course will run from Friday, November 13 through Sunday, November 15, 2015 at Zurich University in the heart of the city of Zurich. The ZIBC as a course on clinical bioethics targets mainly healthcare providers – physicians, nurses and members of ethics committees, but it is open to other professionals with an interest in ethical aspects of clinical practice, such as policy-makers, social workers, patient representatives, psychologists and hospital chaplains. 

The course provides an intensive introduction to theories and key principles of bioethics, the ethical analysis of clinical cases to prepare staff to serve on clinical ethics committees and perform clinical ethics consultations. Knowledge of common ethical problems and dilemmas in medicine, and strategies to address them will help participants increase their competence in addressing ethical questions in medical care. 

The combination of plenary lectures by internationally-renowned experts and small group discussions led by an expert facilitators cover core information about ethical theories, principles, and methods, evolving standards for ethics consultation, and areas of clinical ethical controversy and consensus. 

The program contains lectures on topics as ethics consultation, teaching bioethics and physician-patient-communication after medical mistakes, and also on ‘special topics’ such as bioethics in the movies and literature and medicine. 

The course is bilingual, there will be a simultaneous translation (of German lectures into English and English lectures into German).
