Machteld van den Berg has won the 2018 Swiss School of Public Health ScienceFlashTalk Award at the Swiss Public Health Conference in Neuchâtel on 7 November 2018. 

Machteld convinced the audience with her 3-minute flash talk on "Addressing human realities in large scale clinical trials". In her project Machteld explores the ethical implications of malaria vaccine development in three selected African countries. She uses empirical evidence gathered from 78 semi-structured interviews in Tanzania, Kenya and Uganda with parents of children who were enrolled in a paediatric malaria vaccine clinical trial. By integrating these human realities into research design, large scale clinical trial research can be strengthened.
