Short Bio

After a bachelor’s and a master’s degree in philosophy, Alessandra decided to follow her interests in global justice and human rights and pursued another master’s in human rights and democratization. Her interest in bioethics, along with directly witnessing the unfolding global pandemic and the consequent unequal distribution of much-needed vaccines, moved her curiosity toward the heated debate around the role of intellectual property within the pharmaceutical industry. Her final thesis was awarded best thesis of the year and was subsequently published. After her graduation in 2021, she continued to actively engage with issues at the intersection of intellectual property in pharmaceuticals and human rights. In 2021 she spent some time as a researcher at the Danish Institute for Human Rights in Copenhagen where she kept following discussions at the WTO on a temporary waiver of intellectual property on Covid-19 vaccines. In 2022, she worked as a Blue Book Trainee at the European Commission, DG GROW, where she engaged with the task force created ad hoc for the production and supply of Covid-19 vaccines. Consequently, she served as a researcher at the University of Neuchâtel, where she focused on the relationship between patents and trade secrets applied to biologics. Lastly, she worked for the civil society organization SID where, among others, she engaged with UN member states delegations at the UN and closely monitored the ongoing international negotiations toward establishing a Pandemic Treaty. This further experience strengthened her expertise and interest at the intersecting topics of public health, intellectual property, and the collaboration needed for equitable global solutions.
