Forum for Global Health Ethics: 'The Role of Social Justice in Triage'

The Forum for Global Health Ethics invites you to a new edition of its Webinar Series. Our next webinar ‘The Role of Social Justice in Triage’ will take place on Wednesday, 15th November, from 5pm to 6:30pm (CET).

In this webinar we will discuss the role of social justice in triage decisions and explore the tension that arises between two key guiding principles in triage guidelines: justice and efficiency. Some experts argue that an emergency is not the place to remedy structural injustices, while others claim that social justice should play a relevant role in triage, as certain disadvantaged groups are negatively affected by common triage criteria. Some questions we intend to discuss in the webinar are: What should be the main goal of triage? Should it be efficiency, social justice, or should efficiency and social justice be given equal weight in triage guidelines? What lessons have we learned from triage decisions during the COVID-19 pandemic in different contexts?

Our speakers are:

  • Aamir Jafarey, Centre of Biomedical Ethics and Culture, Sindh Institute of Medical Sciences, Pakistan
