Expertises in Child Psychiatry

Genesis and impact of expertises in child psychiatry (1921–1974)

Our research group investigates the role of psychiatric reports in the placement of children in children's homes and foster families. We ask why, by whom and how the children were examined, how the psychiatric reports were created and in which way the assessments influenced the further biographies of those affected.
Our sources for quantitative and qualitative analyzes are patient files from the cantonal child observation stations in Zurich, Stephansburg (1921–1944) and Brüschhalde (1944–1974), as well as interviews with people who were assessed in these facilities. Since the patient files and reports mainly reflect the perspectives of the psychiatrists and other staff at the observation ward, it is essential to analyze the files critically and to consider the perspectives of those affected in the form of interviews.
